The Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) Program addresses health and youth development issues for at-risk youth, ages 10-19, in the local community. A comprehensive youth development system educates and empowers teenagers with information and skills to make intelligent decisions in the areas of:

• Teen Sexuality
• Alcohol & Substance Abuse
• Tobacco Use
• Violence/Injury Prevention
• Obesity Nutrition

AHYD uses creative mediums to educate teens like curriculum based lessons, group discussions, field trips, expert speakers, mentoring, and clinical services.

Collaboration:
In an effort to maximize resources and services, AHYD’s Youth Development Coordinator facilitates communication and collaboration among other government agencies, faith-based organizations, schools, private and civic organizations that serve youth. AHYD also provides support to these youth organizations in the form of program design, consultation, financial support and referral services.

Teen Centers:
AHYD is responsible for the management of three (3) teen centers in the North Central Health District. The centers are Teen Scene-Bibb; Teens-A-Million-Hancock; and Teen Headquarters-Houston. Each Center is responsible for providing clinical services either directly or through a referral. The centers also provide academic tutoring, community service projects, sex education, leadership and character development, and recreational activities in a safe, nurturing environment. The centers are operated by a trained professional staff which consists of Public Health Educators, Nurses, and Program Assistants. The governing boards of the centers are a Parent Advisory Council and Teen Advisory Council.
